Forming Friendships as a Neurodivergent Adult
As a neurodivergent adult, forming new friendships can be a challenge. Neurodivergent individuals may have difficulty with social interaction and communication, making it harder to establish meaningful relationships. However, with a little effort and some understanding, it is possible to create and maintain friendships as a neurodivergent adult.
Find Common Ground
One of the best ways to form new friendships is to find common ground with others. Whether it's a shared interest in a hobby or a love of a particular TV show, finding something in common with another person can provide a foundation for a meaningful relationship. Consider joining a club or group focused on your interests to meet others who share them.
Be Honest About Your Needs
It's important to be honest about your needs and limitations when forming new friendships. If you need to take breaks from social interaction or have difficulty with certain types of communication, let your potential friend know. Most people will be understanding and willing to accommodate your needs.
Practice Social Skills
For many neurodivergent individuals, social interaction can be difficult. However, social skills can be improved with practice. Consider seeking out a therapist or counselor who can help you develop social skills and strategies for forming and maintaining friendships.
Use Technology to Your Advantage
Social media and online communities can be a great way for neurodivergent individuals to form and maintain friendships. Online communities can provide a level of comfort and safety that can make it easier to connect with others. Consider joining Facebook groups or forums focused on your interests.
Be Patient
Forming new friendships takes time and effort, and it may not happen overnight. Don't get discouraged if you don't immediately connect with others. Keep putting yourself out there and eventually, you'll find people who appreciate you for who you are.
If you're a neurodivergent adult struggling to form new friendships, know that you're not alone. With a little bit of effort and some understanding, it is possible to create meaningful relationships that can last a lifetime.
